Christmas according to Kanye West: the story of “Christmas in Harlem”

In December 2010, Kanye Westwho recently announced his return to Italy in 2026, gave fans a piece that embraces his creativity in a Christmas atmosphere that has its roots in the history of black music: “Christmas in Harlem”. The song features the collaboration of rapper CyHi the Prynce and R&B singer Teyana Taylorboth artists on his then label GOOD Music, and is produced by Hit-Boya young producer who was consolidating his relationship with West at that time. The genesis of the song has a curious story: Hit-Boy says that, thanks to a mutual contact with Kanye’s cousin, he was asked to provide a beat for a Christmas song on the very evening of Kanye’s release party. “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy”, one of Ye’s most famous works.

The result is a piece that mixes hip-hop and soul influences, thanks to the use of samples from Marvin Gaye (“Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing” with Tammi Terrell and “Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)”) and Shuggie Otis (“Strawberry Letter 23”)which help create a warm and nostalgic atmosphere. Before the official release, the song leaked onto the web on December 15, 2010, but a few days later, on December 17, it was released as a single on iTunes, in a shortened version that includes only contributions from West, CyHi the Prynce and Teyana Taylor. Previously, as part of the GOOD Fridays free music giveaway series, a more ensemble version was released featuring rappers such as Cam’ron, Jim Jones, Vado, Pusha T and Big Sean, as well as Musiq Soulchild. The piece recounts moments of daily life and celebration, among illuminated streets, shopping centers and Christmas gifts. Kanye shares the joy of being with his partner, amidst laughter and traditions. CyHi the Prynce instead talks about the absence from home for the holidays, but the connection with the city and music remains strong. Thanks to the use of samples, the song seems to cross multiple eras. Teyana Taylor adds warmth and melody to the chorus. The song alternates funny and romantic moments with ironic and festive references, such as mistletoe and Santa Claus. It’s a vivid portrait of Christmas in Harlem. The lyrics emphasize the importance of enjoying the moment despite the difficulties.

“Christmas in Harlem” received rave reviews. Rolling Stone’s Chuck Eddy praised the song as a “tinsel-tinted” musical gift, capable of transmitting warmth and funwith Teyana Taylor bringing a note of sweetness and CyHi the Prynce adding an ironic and original rap. The magazine then included the piece in the list of the best Christmas songs, ideally comparing it to the classic “Christmas in Hollis” by Run-DMC Rolling Stone’s Andy Greene called the song an “instant classic,” noting West’s ability to create a joyful portrait of the season with the help of his collaborators. “Christmas in Harlem” remains one of Kanye West’s most recognizable Christmas songs today, blending hip-hop, soul and holiday tradition into one piece which managed to win over fans and critics, rightfully entering the pantheon of modern rap Christmas songs.
