Chris Martin: “Coldplay deserve to be screwed”
Since the release of their debut album “Parachutes” in 2000, and subsequent rise to global fame, Coldplay they have faced (and face) numerous criticisms, especially on social media. But Chris Martin he’s now revealed that he’s okay with not being universally loved.
According to a preview of the January 2025 Rolling Stone cover interview, the frontman said: “It would be terrible if we lived in a society where everyone had to like the same thing.”
Addressing Coldplay haters in particular, Martin said: “We’re a very, very easy and safe target for them. We’re not going to fight back. We’re four white, middle-class English men. We deserve to be taken the piss out of it for what we do.” our people did. There’s a reason we play all over the world, and some of that isn’t necessarily very healthy.”
He also spoke about his approach to criticism, saying: “When I say these things about world peace, I’m also talking about myself.”
“It’s an everyday thing to not hate yourself,” he continued. “Forgetting external criticism is our mission right now: We are consciously trying to wave the flag of love as an approach to all things.
“There aren’t many groups that have the ability to promote this philosophy to so many people. So we do it. And I need to hear that too, so that I don’t give up and become bitter and twisted and hidden and hate everyone. Not I want to do it, but the temptation is great.”
This echoes comments Martin made to NME earlier this year in an interview published ahead of the release of his new album ‘Moon Music’ last October. “Right now, and since about 2008, if something comes to me as a song or a good idea and it feels authentic, we do it,” he said at the time. “It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. It’s very liberating, and it was probably started by Brian Eno’s philosophy when he came to rebuild us. Since then, if I find something real and exciting, we do it. It’s taken us to some really strange places and surprising.”
