Charli XCX is solidarity with the trans community and asks for support
Charli xcx It is among the musical artists who have signed an open letter to ask for support for the trans community after the Supreme Court sentence of April 16.
The initiative starts from the artist Drag Queen Tom Rasmussen and Tom Mehrtens, Head of Music & Entertainment of the Society of Prie Satellite414, asked “solidarity” to the trans communities, not binary and intersex that were affected by the Supreme Court judgment of April 16, according to which, based on the Equality Act 2010, the terms “woman” and “sex” refer exclusively to Biological sex at birth.
Among the artists who signed the document as well as Charli XCX there are also Self Esteem, Wolf Alice, Neneh Cherry, Rina Sawayama, Jessie Ware, Four Tet, Jimmy Somerville (Bronski Beat), Jade, Paloma Faith and Mabel together with Alison Goldfrapp, Cmat, Heather Baron-Grazia (Pale Waves), Jasmine.4.T, Oliver SIM (The XX), Kele Okereke (Bloc Party), Marina, Shygirl and Tom Grennan.
This is the content of the letter/appeal signed among others of the “Brat” star and triumphant of the Brit Awards 2025.
“We, signed professionals of the British music industry, are solidarity with the trans communities, not binary and intersex that have been affected by the sentence of the Supreme Court of April 16. We want to add our items to the growing concern chorus (including writers and the cinematographic and television industry of the United Kingdom) and we invite members of our industry and cultural bodies to join us”.
“The British music industry is a vibrant and diversified landscape that thrives thanks to creativity and inclusion. For some time we have been celebrating a multitude of voices and identities and the music industry of the United Kingdom is one of our most avant -garde and culturally vital resources, in which trans, intersex and non -binary people are included in every aspect of the sector, in the past, in the present and in the future. Colleagues, collaborators and trans spectators, non -tracks and intersex are protected from discrimination and harassment in all sectors of industry – in studies, premises, offices or festivals.
“The sentence of the Supreme Court according to which, pursuant to the Equality Act 2010, the ‘woman’ is defined by biological sex, states that” the concept of sex is binary, a person is either a woman or a man “. We believe that this sentence not only compromises the lived reality and threatens the safety of trans, not binary and intersex people who live in the United Kingdom, but also weaken the legal protections in a moment which trans people must face an increase in hatred crimes, discrimination and systemic barriers “.
“The provisional update of the commission for equal opportunities and human rights on the sentence suggests that trans women are not allowed to access structures for women and trans men and access to structures for men is not allowed, also suggesting that trans people can also be excluded from the use of structures that correspond to their sex assigned to birth”. We believe that this guide exposes trans people to embarrassment and harassment, excluding them and trying to erase them from participation in public life.
“We join the many voices that have condemned both the sentence and the guidance of the HRC, (Equality and Human Rights Commission) underlining the negative consequences that both will have for all individuals and the particular damage that trans, non -binary and intersex people must face consequently.
“We congratulate the musical industry organizations that have already expressed their support for the trans community and invite other influential companies and organizations, including, but not only, major and independent record companies, publishers, musical management companies, live agencies, promoters, MMF (Music Manager Forum), UK Music, the union of musicians, (I Collectors) PRS for Music, PPL, AIM, BPI and others and others. Still, to join us in condemning the sentence of the Supreme Court.
“Music has the power to unite, inspire and reflect the wealth of human experience. This is our time to amplify the voices that need to be listened to, to support the inclusiveness and real justice and to ensure that our sector remains a welcoming and avant -garde space for everyone”. Let’s take sides on the side of truth, equality and respect “.
