Caliber 35, new album: “It was a ‘simple’ soundtrack…”

Ellroy vs LA” is the soundtrack for Francesco Zippel’s documentary, which sees Calibro 35 return to cinematic noir and with a new album.

On the next album, out on October 9th, the band pays homage to American noir with a project taken from the soundtrack of Francesco Zippel’s documentary of the same name produced by Quoiat Film. As anticipation the first single is now available “Riots”.

About the album, Calibro 35 tell Rockol:

“It was supposed to be a “simple” soundtrack for the documentary on the great master of American noir who tells the story of his Los Angeles. However, the imagery resonated so much with us that we ended up making a real Calibro album with all the influences collected over the years; from Stelvio Cipriani to Kendrick Lamar via Isaac Hayes and Bob James. When director Francesco Zippel heard it we even became co-stars of the film!”

Ellroy vs LA”, winner of the Nastro D’Argento as best cultural documentary of 2026, is described in a press release as “an atypical documentary, a dark journey into the mind of the master of noir James Ellroy“. Through an in-depth interview and archival footage, the documentary intertwines the personal and artistic story of James Ellroy with his original vision of Los Angeles, alternating his voice with images and sound of Calibro 35, filmed in the studio while they give life to the soundtrack.

The new album taken from “Ellroy vs LA” includes 12 songs which, according to a press release, “bring Calibro 35 back to the territories of cinematic funk after the forays into ‘genre’ soundtracks”, such as those signed by Martellotta, Gabrielli, Rondanini and Colliva for “Sandokan” and “Blanca”.

As the band announced on social media, the album will be “brought around with a concert made of new music and visuals”.
