Bruce Springsteen surprisingly releases a song against ICE
The Boss makes his voice heard again. Bruce Springsteen has surprisingly published a song online against ICE, the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the US federal agency responsible for controlling customs and immigration security, which in recent weeks has ended up at the center of controversy among US and global public opinion following fatal shootings of civilians during operations conducted in Minneapolis, which have created strong social tensions. On January 7, Renée Good, a 37-year-old American woman, lost her life after being shot by an officer during an operation. Subsequently, on January 24, another man, Alex Pretti, a nurse of Italian origins – just like Bruce Springsteen: his mother Adele was the daughter of Italian immigrants from Vico Equense, in the province of Naples – was killed by Border Patrol agents in another shooting linked to ICE operations, between arrests and raids conducted for immigration control in Minnesota.
«On Saturday I wrote this song, yesterday I recorded it and today I released it in response to the state terror that is affecting the city of Minneapolis. It is dedicated to Minneapolis, to our innocent immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good”, wrote the New Jersey rocker in the post shared on social media to announce the release of the song. Then, an invitation: «Stay free», «Remain free». Signed Bruce Springsteen, of course.
The song, 4 minutes and 35 seconds long, is a protest song in all respects, reminiscent of Bob Dylan’s “Desolation Row”. In the text Springsteen quotes United States President Donald Trump, of whom he has always been a fervent opponent. Not only that: in one passage Stephen Miller, deputy chief of staff of the White House, Trump’s right-hand man, and Kristi Noem, the anti-migrant secretary wanted by the US president, are also mentioned.
Trump’s federal thugs beat up on
His face and his chest
Then we heard the gunshots
And Alex Pretti lay in the snow, dead
Their claim was self defense, sir
Just don’t believe your eyes
It’s our blood and bones
And these whistles and phones
Against Miller and Noem’s dirty lies
Translated:
Trump’s federal thugs beat him
on your face and chest
Then we heard the shots
and Alex Pretti lay dead in the snow
Their charge was self-defense, sir
Don’t believe your eyes
It is our blood and bones
And these whistles and telephones
Against the dirty lies of Miller and Noem
