Bruce Springsteen and Fiona Apple on the new Waterboys album

The Waterboys have recruited a host of artists to make their new album. The project is a concept album dedicated to American actor and director Dennis Hopper, with guests Fiona Apple, Bruce Springsteen, Steve Earle and others. Titled “Life, Death and Dennis Hopper”, the album will be released on April 4th and will be preceded by the single “Hopper’s on Top (Genius)” out on January 10th.

In press materials retrieved by Pitchfork, Mike Scott of the Waterboys said: “The arc of his life was the story of our times. He was at the big bang of youth culture in ‘Rebel Without a Cause’ with James Dean; and at the beginning of Pop Art with the young Andy Warhol. He was part of the counterculture, hippie, civil rights and psychedelic scenes of the 1970s and 1980s 10 years, he almost died, came back, got back on track and became a five-picture-a-year actor without losing the sparkle in his eye or the sense of danger or unpredictability that always gathered around him.” About the album, he explained that it is not only about Hopper’s life, but also “the whole strange adventure of being a human soul on planet Earth”.

“Life, Death and Dennis Hopper”, arriving three years after the previous “All Souls Hill”, also features the participation of Sugarfoot, Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes, Kathy Valentine of the Go-Go’s, Patti Palladin, Barny Fletcher and Anana Kaye.
