Bruce Dickinson talks about getting throat cancer in 2014
The singer of Iron Maiden Bruce Dickinson Speaking on the ‘Rich Roll’ podcast, he said he would be the first to help the band find a replacement for him if he could no longer sing the same way after his battle with cancer.
In 2014 the 66-year-old British rocker had a golf ball-sized tumor growing on his tongue and was also diagnosed with throat cancer. Dickinson explained during the interview that she would not have wanted to continue being part of the group if her voice was no longer up to par. Luckily, after undergoing rounds of chemotherapy and radiotherapy in 2015, he returned to tour with the group in 2016.
This is the story of Bruce Dickinson: “When I got throat cancer, the last thing on my mind was, ‘Will I sing again?’ The only thing on my mind was, ‘Am I going to get through this and be alive?’ The last thing on my mind was: Am I going to sing again? I thought, ‘Well, we’ll get to that point when I finish everything and start trying to sing.
‘ And I was quite prepared to accept that I might not be able to sing with Iron Maiden again. I might be able to sing, I might be able to vocalize, I might be able to sing another way, but if I can no longer sing the way I have to sing with Iron Maiden, I’ll help them find a great replacement. Because music is sacrosanct.”
Bruce Dickinson he recently told, as a guest on the Brazilian television program ‘Conversa com Bial’, how it took him 10 months to decide whether to sing again. “It took me about 10 months to decide, ‘Okay, let’s try it.’ When we tried to sing too early… I remember my whole throat, all my muscles, everything was sore and needed to relax.”
The Iron Maiden are currently engaged in theirs “The Future Past World Tour”which will end next December in Brazil, before starting the “Run For Your Lives World Tour” on May 27, 2025 in Budapest, Hungary. The only Italian date will take place Sunday 13 July 2025 at the Euganeo Stadium in Padua.
