Brian James, Damned’s guitarist, was buried at sea
Brian Jamesthe punk band guitarist The Damned died on March 6, 2025, at the age of 70 (Read here).
Brian’s family, who included his wife Minna, his son Charlie and his daughter -in -law Alicia, and the closest friends were present when he was buried off the coast of Newhaven, in the East Sussex, England, April 28.
After going out into the sea with a boat for “about three hours” from Eastbourne, on the return the participants witnessed an intimate commemorative ceremony in a church near the house of Brian and Minna in Brighton.
Speaking to the newspaper The Sun, his wife Minna – who was with the rocker of “Love Song” since he was 18 years old – revealed: “It was a beautiful day and the sea was calm. We were together since I was 18, so it was very exciting”.
“A burial at sea – he agreed – is quite unusual, but it was in his will and therefore we had to do it”. Brian now sleeps with fish, as he wanted before he died. He was a real original in life and he also carried it forward in death. The punk spirit never abandoned him and absolutely wanted his last home to be at sea. ”
James died on March 6 after a six decades long musical career.
A statement published on his Facebook account says: “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of one of the true pioneers of music, guitarist, songwriter and true gentleman, Brian James”. “Incessantly creative and a musical tour de force, during a career that has gone through more than six decades, with his music that also embellished the soundtracks of films and television, in addition to The Damned and Ai The Lords of the New ChurchBrian worked with a plethora of punk artists and rock ‘n’ roll, from Iggy Pop to Wayne Kramerfrom Stewart Copeland to Cheetah Chrome“, The post concludes.
After forming The Damneds, he founded the Tanz der Youth before giving life to The Lords of the New Church with Bators Boots.
The group has released three studio albums and single products such as “Open Your Eyes”, “Dance with me” and “Method to My Madness”.
His career continued with the Dripping lips and the Brian James Gangpublishing solo material and collaborating with a series of influential musicians.
Brian met with the original Damned members in 2022 for a series of shows in the United Kingdom, who arrived at more than four decades from the release of “New Rose”.
