Billy Corgan and the work of “Mellon Collie”: “It’s not a rock work”
On the sidelines of a recent interview with with Paris Schutz of “Fox 32 Chicago”, the frontman of the Smashing Pumpkins Billy Corgan spoke of his decision to collaborate with the Lyric Opera of Chicago to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the monumental double album of his band, “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness”, with a transposition into opera.
Regarding how the collaboration was born, as transcribed by Blabbermouth.net, Corgan said: “Some friends who have contacts with Lyric people asked me: ‘You would ever like something to do with us? They really need new energy that comes from the outside. It is known that the world of work and classical music is going through a difficult period compared to general culture – which I understand and respect, being a fan of the incredible repertoire performed at Lyric and with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. meeting point “.
As a question about how he intends to adapt “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness” in a single theatrical production, Corgan replied: “Good question.
I think the first thing to do is tackle the musical theme, creating a thread of the musical leitmotif that tells a story at a compositional level. Once you do that, you can understand how to stage it and structure it. We are not trying to make it a sort of operetta. I believe that the musical and textual narration is enough to tell a story. “He added:” The album was written as a sort of mythical 24 hours in someone’s mind. So I think that, depending on how music on a modular level works, the entire work will hold up. But only after hearing it all together can I make the necessary adjustments. “
Billy Corgan therefore stressed that he did not want to create a simple “rock work” of “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness”, perhaps with some arrangements for arches here and there. The frontman of the Smashing Pumpkins clarified:
“This is a complete transposition in the classic and operistic world. The first thing I told Lyric was: I don’t want the work to become rock. My fans do not want to see such a thing. I don’t want to see such a thing. I saw other groups try and, in my opinion, the results have always been a little fluctuating. It is interesting, of course. They proposed it to us too, and I always refused. Reinterpret my work in a thematic and aesthetic way in a completely different musical context. They adapt. for this reason I am working with a true arranger of arches from that world: he will decode the melodies “.
“A Night of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness” is described in the press release as “a new commission inspired by one of the greatest alternative albums of all time. You will hear Corgan and special guests together with the epic sound of the orchestra and the Lyric Opera of Chicago choir in a completely new sound and visual experience. That you are fan of the Smashing Pumpkins and curious to listen to their music in a music in a music in a music in a music Sumptuous dimension, or that you simply want to live a new work inspired by the unexpected, this will be one of the unmissable cultural events of the season “.
The show will be staged for only seven evenings, from 21 to 30 November 2025. Corgan reimmagina his masterpiece exploiting all the technical and artistic resources of the Lyric Opera, for an immersive experience that fades the boundaries between work, rock and performative art. With new arrangements and orchestrations signed by Corgan and James Lowe, who will also direct the orchestra, in addition to the costumes of the House of Gilles by Gilles and ChloƩ Mendel Corgan, these representations promise to further increase the legend of the original album and expand the very concept of opera.
