Because Megadeth cover Metallica on their latest album
Megadeth have announced the release of their new and seventeenth album for January 23rd studio albumswhich will also be the latest project record company of the group led by Dave Mustaine. The album, which bears the name of the thrash metal band as its title, will include ten songs and a bonus track, namely one cover of Metallica’s “Ride the lightning”.. The song originally came released by the Four Horsemen in 1984 in their second studio album, entitled “Ride the Lightning”. Mustainewho was Metallica’s lead guitarist from 1982 to 1983, appears as co-author of the original song and in a recent interview he explained Why he decided to make his own versionwith his band, for Megadeth’s latest album.
On the sidelines of an exclusive chat with “Metal Hammer”, the frontman of the “Symphony of destruction” group said that he had recorded an accelerated version of “Ride the lightning” as a tribute to his former bandmates. “I think it was the right time to record it and close the loop,” Dave Mustaine explained:
“It’s a return to my roots and, honestly, it’s a great song: we played it really well. We sped it up a little, but personally I think that when you decide to reinterpret a song, you have to do it as good or even better than the original. And I really think we did it as good as the original.”
He added: “I’ve always respected James Hetfield’s playingso this it’s a tribute to him and Metallica for everything they have done — and for everything we have done. It’s a legacy truly born in that tiny garage in Norwalk, California.”
Shortly after being removed from Metallica due to friction with the other members of the band, especially frontman James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich, Mustaine formed Megadeth. Given his militancy in the “Kill ’em all” band, Dave Mustaine appears as an author on several Metallica songsparticularly in their debut album, and is credited for two songs of the second studio work, “Ride the lightning”. Among these, in addition to the title track, Mustaine is co-author of “The call of Ktulu”. When Megadeth released their debut album, Killing is my business… And business is good!” in 1985, Dave chose to include the song “Mechanix”, originally written for Metallica, but Hetfield and his companions later changed it and renamed it “The Four Horsemen”. an intermittent rivalry between Metallica and Megadethand credit disputes have gone on for decades.
Now, decades later, Mustaine seems to just want to pay homage to his past. On October 30th, news arrived that Megadeth had decided to include their own reinterpretation of “Ride the lightning” in their new and latest album. The album will be followed by a tour that will bring Dave Mustaine and his companions to perform in Italy toofor a scheduled date next year June 14th in Ferrara.
