Alex Turner lent Fontaines DC his guitar
Carlos O’Connellguitarist of Fontaines DC revealed that he got the “heavier sounds” of the last record”Romance” with a guitar that was lent to him by Alex Turner his colleague of the Arctic Monkeys.
In a recent video on the site Guitarist, O’Connell played some of the guitars of Rory Gallagher and, while playing his custom 1963 Epiphone Coronet, he said he got it because the Arctic Monkeys frontman reminded him of it. “He had one of these, probably from a similar year,” he said. “He lent it to us, his, for the latest album.” As fans have shared online, on physical copies of “Romance,” Turner is thanked “for the loan of the guitar.”
“And in the end it was the guitar that we used, both Conor Curley and I, for the heavier sounds on the album – continued O’Connell – it was the best at getting them.”
When asked how he felt about switching from Fender, he said he “fell in love” with it because when they wrote the songs they didn’t have a guitar like that. “So we were playing it trying to get that super-fast sound,” adding that the sound wasn’t “coming the way we wanted it to.” And about the sound he added: “It’s just like real punk rock, you know, just like the Stooges. I love it, I wish I had one of these.”
When Fontaines DC presented the new songs “Romance” And “Favorite” at an intimate concert in Brooklyn in May, Turner was in attendance. As O’Connell and Conor Deegan III recounted in an interview with NME, Beck had told them two years earlier that he was a fan. “He told us about I asked Alex what music he was listening to these days and Alex said the only thing he listens to is Fontaines,” O’Connell said. “And Arctic Monkeys are so iconic, obviously – they were so big when they came along.” .
The praise was mutual, with frontman Grian Chatten stating that “if you were ever to model your career on a band, you should look to Arctic Monkeys”.
Fontaines are currently engaged in an extensive North American tour, which will last until October 20th and conclude in Philadelphia. Later in the year, Chatten and co. will embark on their 2024 UK and Ireland tour, taking place in November and December.
After their performance in June 2024 at the Prima Estate Festival, Fontaines DC they will return to Italy for three dates (Bologna, Rome, Milan) on 17, 18, 19 June 2025
