Neil Young is working on a new album

Neil Young, the surprise return to the stage

About a year after his last live performance and after canceling his entire European tour, on the evening of May 22nd Neil Young surprisingly returned to the stage during a benefit concert held last night in Vancouver.

The event celebrated Canadian environmentalist David Suzuki’s 90th birthday. Young, a long-time supporter of Suzuki’s work, was one of the many famous people present at the evening. Guests also included Jane Fonda, Al Gore, Bruce Cockburn, Chantal Kreviazuk and Sarah McLachlan.

During his surprise appearance, Neil Young performed two of his classics, “After the Gold Rush” and “Heart of Gold,” in solo acoustic versions. It was the rocker’s first performance since the Painted Turtle benefit concert on October 25, 2025 and, importantly, comes months after the cancellation of his 2026 tour. Below you can see a video of Young’s recent performance.

The artist had planned to spend the summer touring Europe, with dates also planned in Italy where he would return after a 10-year absence. But in February the musician suddenly canceled all the dates planned for 2026. “I have decided to take a break and this time I will not go on tour in Europe,” Young explained: “Thanks to everyone who purchased tickets. I’m sorry to disappoint you, but this is not the right time. I really love playing live and being with you and the Chrome Hearts. Love, Neil. Be well.”
