Tony Iommi awarded Meritorious Citizen of Birmingham

The 78-year-old guitarist of Black Sabbath, Tony Iommiand the chairman of Birmingham City Football Club, Tom Wagnerare among this year’s winners with i Lord Mayor’s Awardscelebrating the contribution made to the city of Birmingham. The awards were presented by the Mayor of Birmingham, Zafar Iqbalduring the annual general meeting of the British city’s city council.

Tony Iommioriginally from the Handsworth area, near Birmingham, has been recognized for his achievements as a musician, songwriter and producer. As a founding member of the Black SabbathTony is recognized as one of the creators of heavy metal music. The award recognizes the genre’s continuing impact on Birmingham’s cultural landscape which has enriched the lives of millions of people and enhanced the city’s national and international reputation.
