Why Grohl never worked with Novoselic again after Nirvana

Pat Smear’s favorite artist is a surprise

During a hosted podcast Broken Records the frontman of Foo Fighters Dave Grohl revealed his bandmate’s unsuspected favorite artist Pat Smear.

The 66-year-old Smear has a clear rock career behind him. Starting from the role of co-founder of the Los Angeles punk band Germsto move on to his period in Nirvana and reach his many years in Foo Fighters. So you might think that the favorite musician of Pat Smear is an inveterate rocker…

It’s not really like that. Dave Grohl challenged the podcast host Justin Richmond to try to guess who Smear’s favorite artist is by anticipating a threatening: “You just won’t succeed”. Unconvinced, Richmond threw in a Guns N’ Roses. Grohl pressed him: “So, you’d think it’s maybe some rock ‘n’ roll, maybe some sparkly ’70s stuff? Maybe some punk rock, maybe some prog. Number one: Mariah Carey.”

Carey, after all, has something rock about her. In the mid-nineties he recorded a grunge album entitled
“Someone’s Ugly Daughter”
. A version of the album,
as Loudwire reports
was published in 1995 by Chick, with
Clariss Dane
on vocals, but Carey’s version remains unreleased.

THE
Foo Fighters
they played some songs with the singer of
Pretty Reckless Taylor Momsen
behind the microphone the night before
Grammy Awards
last February, during the event
MusiCares Person of the Year 2026
dedicated to
Mariah Carey
. Apparently, it was
Pat Smear
that of having Momsen sing with them.

This is the story of
Taylor Momsen
about that collaboration: “There was a call… on a Wednesday. Pat called me and left a message saying, ‘Hey, I have a favor to ask of you, it’s about Mariah Carey. Call me back.’ And I didn’t do it… What does that mean? Then I called him back and he said, ‘She’s going to be honored at MusiCares this year, she has this secret grunge record,’ which strangely enough I had already heard about and knew about… He sent me the songs, I listened to them and it was an immediate yes.”
