Gabriel writes: “Their currency is not based on military, economic or political power, but only on the moral authority that comes from having lived extraordinary and altruistic lives. It is a theme that I wanted to talk about, to write about and that I wanted to encourage, because the situation is quite dark in many places and I believe that we need people who can give a boost to both us and our leaders and keep alive some fundamental values of justice, compassion and democracy: a hope that can help us imagine a just, peaceful and equitable world.”

As with the other songs published so far by Peter Gabriel for the album “oi”Also “Won’t Stand Down” it will be released in two versions: a bright size mix (more positive) edited by Mark “Spike” Stent and a dark side mix (more pessimistic) curated by Chad Blake. The 76-year-old English musician says: “I think people generally react much better to positive images of the future than to negative ones, which scare them. We’re much more likely to interact if we feel hope. We don’t see many positive visions of the future at the moment, or at least they’re not projected as strongly as negative ones, so I think it’s really important to start looking for visions to aspire to and people who can offer them to us.”

The message of
Peter Gabriel
he continues, “I’ve always been a fan of Marvin Gaye and there was a Cuban element to his song ‘Sexual Healing’ that I really liked and was exploring – it was something about the way he allowed the rhythm to move that I liked, and I tried to bring an element of that into this song, while allowing it to evolve into something different.”
