Resurrection songs: Easter in 10 songs (and an EP)

Until a few days ago, Easter had less musical value than Christmas, which inspired hundreds of themed songs and albums. Then came U2, who released “Easter Lily”, an EP released on Good Friday. 6 “resurrection songs”, inspired by Patti Smith and her “Easter.
Easter is transformation, resurrection both in a spiritual, symbolic and cultural sense: even before U2, there are songs that evoke these meanings or simply use it as a backdrop to tell a story. There is no real “Easter repertoire” comparable to that of Christmas songs, but hope and renewal are the common theme, ranging between different genres: from American country classics, such as “The Old Rugged Cross” by Alan Jackson, up to the more controversial rock atmospheres of “Easter?” by Jefferson Airplane. Some songs explicitly address the story of Jesus, as in the case of Fabrizio De André, while others, such as “Easter” by Patti Smith, use Easter as a metaphor for inner rebirth.
We have selected 10 of the songs that can be listened to on the occasion of Easter: some speak directly of the resurrection, others contain the word “Easter” in the title, while still others evoke the concept of rebirth in a broader sense. Most obviously the U2 EP, which is mandatory listening these days
Happy Easter!
