Placebo: “Here is our director’s cut of the first album”

To celebrate three decades since the release of their debut album i Placebo they announced “Placebo Re:Created”a powerful new reimagining of the album that introduced them to the world in 1996. The album will be released on June 19th. The band recently released the new version of the hit single “Bruise Pristine”, reworked by the band using the original tapes. I Placebo, that’s next On November 6th they will play at the Forum in Assagothey expanded it making it heavier and more dynamic than the original, even restoring a previously omitted section in French that fans can now hear for the first time.

After performing songs like “Bruise Pristine” for three decades, the songs have naturally evolved, and this perspective brings new energy to the overall project. Originally arriving at the height of the Britpop era, Placebo clearly distinguished themselves from mainstream culture. While much of the British music of that period tended towards a kind of nostalgia, Placebo’s debut offered something decidedly more provocative and confrontational. Their songs tackled issues such as sexuality, androgyny, addiction and alienation with an honesty rarely heard in mainstream rock of the time, cementing the band as one of the most distinctive voices of their generation.

Thirty years later, “Placebo Re:Created” sees the band return to this seminal album with a new perspective. The new album features revisited and enriched versions of all ten songs from the original albumplus two bonus tracks, capturing the evolution of these songs through decades of live performance, while maintaining the raw spirit that defined them. The songs include singles such as “Nancy Boy” And “36 Degrees”songs that helped consolidate Placebo’s reputation. These new recordings amplify the urgency and attitude. Today, discussions about identity, gender expression, and individuality are more visibleand often more contested than ever. In this context, the origins of Placebo’s debut appear extraordinarily revealing again.

Speaking about the new album, Placebo explain: We consider this work as a director’s cut. We didn’t recreate it from scratch. We went back to the original tapes and brought thirty years of experience playing these songs live onto the record. This project was about finally completing the album, bringing it into the 21st century sonically, while still preserving its original integrity and spirit. It’s not about improving its contents, there’s nothing wrong with it, it’s about completing it.” Then again: “When we made the first album, we didn’t yet have the experience or studio knowledge necessary to fully translate what we had in mind. Over the years, the songs have taken on a life of their own on stage; they grew, they developed, they completed themselves in a certain sense. It is a celebration of our origins and a meeting point between who we were then and who we are today. A way to honor that innocence, while allowing the songs to exist with the confidence and energy of the band we’ve become”.
