Goodbye to Tommy DeCarlo: the Boston singer dies at 60

Tommy DeCarlothe historic frontman of the American rock band Bostondied at the age of 60. The news was confirmed by the family and the group’s official channels, specifying that the death occurred following a recent diagnosis of cancer.

According to what was reported by international newspapers, DeCarlo disappeared surrounded by his loved ones. The news shook the world of classic rock, as the singer had become the face and voice of the band for nearly two decades, carrying on the group’s legacy following the tragic death of founding member Brad Delp.

Tommy DeCarlo’s professional history remains one of the best-known cases of fortuitous discovery in the digital age: In 2007, DeCarlo was working as an associate at a Home Depot store in Charlotte, North Carolina. A longtime Boston fan, he had uploaded several covers of the band to his MySpace page.

After the death of Brad Delp, the band’s leader Tom Scholz listened to DeCarlo’s recordings. Impressed by the vocal similarity and technique, he first invited him to perform at a tribute concert and, in 2008, officially hired him as the new lead singer.

During his 17 years of militancyDeCarlo led the band on numerous world tours, performing such immortal classics as More Than a Feeling, Don’t Look Back And Amanda. He also lent his voice to the group’s latest studio album, “Life, Love & Hope”, released in 2013.

In addition to his commitment to Boston, DeCarlo was active with his solo project and the band DeCarloformed together with his son Tommy DeCarlo Jr. His last public appearance was a few months ago, before his health conditions drastically worsened.
