Everyone loves Bon Scott, the coolest guy in rock’n’roll
The heirs of the former frontman of AC/DC Bon Scott – who passed away on 19 February 1980 at the age of 33 – have announced a series of initiatives to celebrate the 80th birthday of the Scottish-born rocker, who would have turned 80 on 9th July.
As reported by Loudersound, among the events aimed at remembering the singer theAustralian Broadcasting Corporation (Australia’s main public broadcasting company, ed.) will provide video content from Bon Scott to his official YouTube channel, including a series of interviews with, among others, Rick Springfield, Sammy Hagar And Scott Ian of the Anthrax.
Scott’s almost contemporary Sammy Hagar he said: “I was a fan of Bon Scott. Let me explain, when I heard his voice for the first time, I thought: ‘As a singer, this guy is amazing’. I love the way he sings, he gives everything. His voice was always on the verge of breaking. Just one more step and he lost it. He’s like a car driver who goes to the limit and risks going out at every turn. And that’s how you win a race.”
The 78-year-old Hagar went on to explain: “I really liked that about him. In ’76 or ’77, shortly after the Montrose thing (the band Hagar was in, ed.), I was at a show with AC/DC, a little 2000-seat theater or something like that, I opened and I was really excited. He was really lively. I watched the whole concert. I loved him. I loved his attitude. Bon was the kind of person who every guy in rock and roll loves. He’s just the coolest guy.”
Also the frontman of Judas Priest Rob Halford is of the same opinion as Hagar: “Bon’s attitude, bearing and swagger gave him the everyman image the world loved him for. His voice, his look and his onstage persona won us all over: there’s an unparalleled uniqueness that cements Bon’s legendary status in rock ‘n’ roll.”
The drummer of Metallica Lars Ulrich spoke with much admiration: “Bon Scott was the coolest singer ever: his vocal delivery, the ironic double entendres and his magnetic personality. AC/DC’s early records – “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap”, “Let There Be Rock”, “Powerage”, “Highway To Hell” – are simply timeless.”
Pure Josh Homme he doesn’t hide his deep admiration for Scott: “Watching all those early videos like ‘Jailbreak,’ it’s the best. I mean, AC/DC has to be one of my favorite bands ever. Bon Scott could sing rock’n’roll, which was hard to do and take seriously.”
