40 years later a Michael McDonald album with the Doobie Brothers

The meeting of the Doobie Brothers with Michael McDonald will continue and extend beyond the next tour, the American band has in fact confirmed that the group is back in the recording studio to work on a new album.

The 72-year-old McDonald joined the Doobie Brothers for the 50th anniversary tour which took place in 2021, although it was originally scheduled for 2020.

Those concerts were the group's first with McDonald in 25 years, and now they're recording their first collection of new material together since .“One Step Closer” released in 1980.

The guitarist/singer Pat Simmons announced the news on Facebook by publishing a long message, in which, among other passages, we read. “We are very close to finishing an album of new songs. We are once again lucky to have John Shanks as producer and Michael McDonald with us. It's the first time in 40 years that Michael has recorded an entire album with the band and in my humble opinion it's turning out to be some of the best music we've ever made together!”

Even though this will be the first album by
Doobie Brothers
with
Michael McDonald
since 1980, it's not exactly the first time that McDonald has joined Doobie in the studio. In fact, McDonald contributed vocals and keyboards to
“Southbound”
of 2014.
