Why Angelina Mango’s Spanish Launch Is a Risky Challenge
“Since ‘Melodrama’ is platinum, I think it’s only right to take him on a little trip to Spain. We’re leaving on September 20th,” Angelina Mango wrote four days ago, celebrating the platinum win for the single released last May by announcing the imminent release of a Spanish version of the same song. The “spanish version” of “Melodrama” was released today, accompanied by a video clip on YouTube directed by Milanese Martina Pastori (active mostly in the rap field: she has directed clips of songs by Fabri Fibra, Ghali, Mecna, Massimo Pericolo, but also commercials for brands), in which – wearing a pink bodysuit and trainers – the former winner of “Amici” lets loose together with a dance troupe,
recalling both her performance at Eurovision and Rosalía’s imagery and aesthetics that characterise the song, between urban, electronic and Latin rhythms.
Angelina Mango had actually started to filter into the Iberian market already in May, even before leaving for Malmö for the Eurovision Song Contest, publishing together with the singer Alvaro De Luna a Spanish version of “La Noia”. Goal: to get ahead with the launch in Madrid even before the Eurovision stage: the Spanish version of “La noia” has reached 1.6 million streams on Spotify. On the other hand, “La noia” was quite well received in Spain during the passage to Eurovision:The Madrid jury gave Angelina one point (no big deal), while In the televoting, her performance in the final was the seventh most voted by the Spanish “I’m quite convinced that I live music with the freedom to choose what I want to do when I’m in the studio, if I want to make a pop ballad, an urban piece, a Latin piece.
I like to explore, I like that music has no borders,” she told the microphones of one of the main Spanish radio stations, Los40, when last June she went to promote in Madrid together with Álvaro De Luna.If the Spanish version of “La noia” was a way to look beyond the Pyrenees, now Angelina seems to be serious.
The “Spanish version” of “Melodrama” is, as she herself has hinted, only the start of a project in Spanish that will presumably keep her busy for the next few months. It is objectively a challenge, because it is going to play in a championship that for the genre it does, that mix of urban, pop, electronic, singer-songwriter and Latin music, already has a queen, that Rosalia which Angelina herself clearly seems to be inspired by (it is no coincidence that she brought the choreographer of the voice of “Malamente” and “Di mi nombre” to Eurovision, Mecnun Giasar): it will be necessary to understand if Mango’s proposal will be judged original enough by the Spanish public to have a chance. .
Angelina will also arrive in Spain with a tour of small European clubs which, after the series of dates in Italy, will start on October 30th from Munich: On November 11th the singer-songwriter from Basilicata will perform in Room 2 of the Razzmatazz in Barcelonawhich has a capacity of less than 1,000 people, while on November 13th it will be at Sala Chango in Madridwhich includes two rooms with a total capacity of 1,200 people.
