What Slash thinks of Yngwie Malmsteen
Among guitarists sometimes there is absolute competition and we don’t see eye to eye very much, other times however we understand each other wonderfully and it is esteem that prevails. The guitarist of Guns N’ Roses Slash he always esteemed Yngwie Malmsteen despite the latter having a totally different style from his.
In an interview with Guitar World in 2024, the British-born musician said that he is always drawn to musicians who have their own personality and this is undoubtedly the case for the Swedish guitarist.
“It doesn’t matter the genre of sound, the really good ones that stand out are the ones that have a unique personality. I’ve always been attracted to this thing. It doesn’t matter what technique they use, as long as it’s theirs. Yngwie? Yngwie owns that shit whether you like it or not.”

he had the opportunity to reiterate his admiration for his six-string colleague: “Yngwie literally blew my mind when he arrived on the Los Angeles music scene in the early ’80s. The fastest and most articulate, fluid, melodic and classical rock guitarist I had ever heard. After all these years he is still the best at what he does.”
After having played in some bands at the beginning of his career, Yngwie, having set up his own business, has never regretted his decision.
In an interview with Eddie Trunk dating back to 2022, he explained why he wouldn’t like to join a band. “Well, never say never, but it’s most likely a no. Because, as everyone knows, I’m in a rock and roll environment. It’s a rock and roll band, basically, it’s on stage. But the way I create is very similar to that of a painter or a writer. I don’t paint half a painting and then call a friend of mine and say, ‘Hey, can you come finish half the painting for me?’ That’s the only thing. It’s not because I’m selfish, it’s just a matter of artistic expression.” .
