Violet Grohl, Dave’s daughter debuts with her first songs
“THUM” And “Applefish”: these are the titles of the two songs that mark the official debut of the solo project of Violet, Dave Grohl’s daughter. Nineteen-year-old Violet, already on tour with her father with the Foo Fighters and guest with her voice on some of their songs, now makes her debut with original songs all his. The two pieces are available in physical format on 7″ vinyl on Bandcamp. “THUM” – which can also be streamed here – takes up side A and “Applefish” is on side B.
A distorted guitar and fast drums which recall the Strokes at the time of “Is this it”, which then stabilizes on a regular rhythm to accommodate Violet’s voice: this is how “THUM”, just over two minutes of 90s alternative, which also recalls bands like Veruca Salt and Breeders.
In contrast, “Applefish” – available only via digital purchase or on vinyl – is a slower, more cinematic song built around Violet Grohl’s vocals.
“I’m excited to share a preview of what I’ve been working on over the last year. Finally these tracks are yours,” the girl wrote on social media to present the debut of her project. The release of the two songs follows news that Violet was working on her debut album with producer Justin Raisen (Kim Gordon, Charli XCX), along with other collaborators. At the moment, on the Bandcamp page of “THUM” and “Applefish”, the names of any collaborators are not shown and the complete credits of the songs are not available.
Since debuted on stage in 2018among other things, Violet participated as a backing vocalist on the album “Medicine at midnight” by Foo Fighters and also on the song “Show me how”, from their latest album “But here we are”, and also collaborated with her father in a cover of “Nausea” by X in 2021. Furthermore, the young singer followed Dave Grohl’s band on tour as a backing vocalist. In recent years Violet has shown that she also has her own talent and that she knows how to stand on her own two feet. In 2022, Violet paid tribute to Jeff Buckley and Amy Winehouse re-reading some of their pieces live at tribute concert to the late Foo Fighter drummer, Taylor Hawkins, in London (here is our story from Wembley) and in Los Angeles. More recently, the young Grohl frequented the small Sun Rose club in Los Angeles and just over two years ago she joined David Bowie’s pianist Mike Garson during a show at a West Hollywood club to perform covers of the late British musician. During the concert at the Sun Rose in Los Angeles, the young Grohl also duetted with her father on “Show me how” from the latest Foo Fighters album, “But here we are”, and on “Heart-Shaped Box” by Dave’s former band, Nirvana.
