Tiny Desk Concerts hosted the Buena Vista Social Club
Tiny desk concerts is a web video format of NPR, The American public radio based in Washington, where bands and artists are invited to play within an office. The performances must be made without equipment that amplify the sound or voice, for the showcase there is only one general test and the performance lasts about 20 minutes.
Over the years the format has seen prestigious guests perform (Read here). Among others we remember: Bad Bunny, Coldplay, Erykah Badu, Idles and Billie Eilish, Tyler the Creator.
The last performances saw “among the desks” i Buena Vista Social Club (in a downsized version) who proposed their Cuban music.
Before being a Broadway musical with Tony Award nomination, the Buena Vista Social Club was a second opportunity. From the Cuban revolution forward, many musicians in the country have disappeared, but in 1996 an ensemble was formed that brought the genre back to the limelight.
In their performance al Tiny desk concerts The band started with “El cuarto de tula“, then giving space to the vocal harmonies of D’Von Moody, Wesley Wray and Isa Antonetti on”The Negra Tomasa“. Antonetti then ventured into the standard”Lágrimas Negras“. The set was closed by Mel Semo, with”Candle“.
Marco Ramirezwho wrote the book on the Buena Vista Social Club, was the “narrator” for this show, guiding listeners through history.
