Tina Turner told Bryan Adams, “I love this song!”
Once Bryan Adams said his 1984 album “Reckless” “it was the best album I ever made.” The singles were taken from that album “Heaven”, “Summer Of ’69”, “Somebody”, “Run To You”, “One Night Love Affair” and the duet with Tina Turner, “It’s only love”.
In an interview with Classic Rock magazine in 2015, the Canadian musician said of the album: “It was the culmination of really positive energy and great songs that came at the right time. Jim (Vallance) and I were at the peak of our songwriting careers, and the record was made with real musicians, that’s why it still sounds good.”
“Run To You”
it was the album’s first single and reached the Top Ten in Canada, the United States and number eleven in Great Britain. But as Adams revealed, it was a song that had previously been rejected by
Blue Öyster Cult
. Bryan was surprised when they discarded it as its opening guitar riff echoed their 1976 hit,
“(Don’t Fear) The Reaper”
.
When he started preparing
“Reckless”,
as told by
MusicRadar
he dusted it off
“Run To You”
. This was one of the few songs that Adams and Vallance had written in advance. They had too
“One Night Love Affair”
And
“Heaven”
. In the basement of Vallance’s home in Vancouver, Canada, the same city where Adams also lived, the two quickly wrote more songs. “It was almost as if every day we met a new song was born. Monday was Somebody, Tuesday She’s Only Happy When She’s Dancin’, Wednesday Summer Of ’69…”
Recording began at Little Mountain Studios in Vancouver in March 1984, with
Bob Clearmountain
to production. When they recorded
“Run To You”
just one try was enough. “I’m proud of it. I remember Bob Clearmountain standing up in the control room and saying, ‘Wow! You really need to hear this!’ When he played it again, I said, ‘Let’s not touch it. Let’s move on to the next song!’ We recorded it two or three more times, because we could. But it never came out as good as the first one.”
Another piece that quickly took shape was the one proposed by
Jim Vallance
.
“It’s Only Love”
it wasn’t written with a duet in mind, but Adams felt it needed another voice, to make it special. And he had only one singer in mind:
Tina Turner
. A demo of the song was sent to Turner’s management and a meeting was arranged for when she would perform in Vancouver as a supporting artist on
Lionel Richie
.
Bryan Adams
he admitted he was nervous as he waited for her backstage. “And then, I saw this thick hair coming down the hall. I could hear her saying, ‘Where is she? Where is she?’ Someone said, ‘Here he is.’ And Tina said, ‘Bryan, I love this song! I want to record it!’ I said, ‘Let’s do it tomorrow!'”
Tina Turner
he accepted immediately, but Adams thought to himself: I’ll only believe it when I see it. But the following afternoon, she arrived at Little Mountain and made a performance that overwhelmed Bryan and his team. “After we recorded it and she said goodbye to us, it was like a tornado had hit. I said, ‘Bob, could you listen to it again? You definitely recorded it, right?’ He said yes, thank God.”
Bryan Adams will be in concert in Italy, in support of his 2025 album “Roll With The Punches” (read the review here), on 30 June at the Teatro Antico in Taormina and on 28 November at the Unipol Dome in Milan.
