There are those who say no: The Smiths. Or rather Johnny Marr

The return to live performances of the Oasis It has caused a stir in the divorced world and given fans hope that they will be able to see their favorites together again.

In the last few days we had told how the guitarist of Smiths, Johnny Marrresponded to a fan who was hoping for the band’s return (Read here) and above all of another couple that broke up like that of Morrissey/Marr

After that answer given by Marr comes the version of Morrissey regarding a possible (but increasingly unrealistic) comeback of the two. The singer and frontman of the English band claimed that the lucrative deal, which he was in favor of, would have seen the two on tour together next year. But Johnny Marr denied any interest in such an operation.

In a statement, posted on Morrissey Central’s X – Morrissey profile, the singer wrote: “In June 2024, AEG Entertainment Group made a lucrative offer to both Morrissey and Marr to tour the world as ‘The Smiths’ through 2025.” “Morrissey – who speaks in the third person on his website – said yes to the offer; Marr ignored the offer.”

He added: “Morrissey embarks on a sold-out US tour in November. Marr continues to tour as a special guest of New Order.”

This is certainly not an olive branch.

This is not the first attempt at a reunion between the two artists. Marr recalls it in his 2016 autobiographical book “Set The Boy Free”. The two had already discussed the possibility of reuniting The Smiths in a 2008 meeting. “I was happy to see him, it had been 10 years or more since we last saw each other,” he wrote. “We caught up on personal and family news and reminisced a bit.” “All of a sudden,” the guitarist recalled, “we were talking about the possibility of the band reforming and at that moment it seemed like with the right intentions it could actually be done and that it could even be great. We hung out for a bit longer and after more orange juice (for me) and more beer (for him) we hugged and said goodbye.”

But then things didn’t work out. “For four days it was a very real prospect. We would have to find someone new on drums (due to legal issues with the original drummer), but if The Smiths had wanted to reform they would have made a lot of people happy, and with all our experience we might have been even better than before.” But Marr, again in his 2016 memoir, revealed that eventually “communication ended” between the two and “things went back to the way they were and how I expect they will always be.”

And in light of recent events, things are likely to get worse.
