The strange trio: Ed Sheeran with Dave Grohl and John Mayer

One is the most popular singer-songwriter of recent years, the other is a drummer and leader of a rock band par excellence, the other is a pop-rock guitarist who also played with the heirs of the Grateful Dead: what does Ed Sheeran have to do with Dave Grohl and John Mayer? The three performed together on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Wednesday night to perform “Drive,” the song included in the soundtrack to the film F1: The Movie. On stage with him an exceptional lineup: bassist Pino Palladino, as well as Blake Slatkin and Rami Jaffee (Foo Fighters).

The group had recorded the studio version of the song with Grohl on drums, Mayer and Slatkin on guitars, Palladino on bass and Jaffee on keyboards. Kimmel is currently hosting performances of songs included in the films, such as that of the trio EJAE, Rei Ami and Audrey Nuna and their “Golden” from KPop Demon Hunters. Both songs are on the shortlist for the 2026 Oscar for best original song.
Meanwhile, Sheeran will go on tour on June 13, 2026 to promote the album “PLAY”, released last year. Grohl and Jaffee are on tour with the Foo Fighters, who will be at IDays in Milan next July.
