The Spin Doctors return to release a record
The Spin Doctorsiconic nineties alt-rock band, have announced their first studio album in 12 years: it will be titled “Face Full of Cake” and will be released on April 11th via Capitol Records.
The group also released the album’s first single, “Still A Gorilla“, and its video. The song features a louder and heavier sound, but with the same sense of humor they are known for. Inspired by the energy of “Konichiwa Bitches” Of Robynthe song is an exploration of new territory by the group with a 35-year career behind them.
“Still A Gorilla” is a very challenging song that talks about what it means to be human,” says the singer Chris Barron. “Aaron Comessthe drummer, had it in mind for a long time and every time he and I sat down to try to write lyrics, it never came together.”
But then Comess sent Barron the aforementioned 2005 song by the Swedish singer-songwriter as a reference point and things came together. “Aaron said to me, ‘A vibe like this would be nice,’ and the humor of that song gave me input, so I sat down and wrote it in an hour.”
Follow-up to 2013’s If the River Was Whiskey, Spin Doctor’s next album marks their debut on Capitol Records and the group’s first album with their new bassist Jack Daley, who joined the band full-time in 2021.
“Face Full of Cake” may date back to the early days of the pandemic, but after several writing sessions – including a stint in Phish’s Mike Gordon’s studio in Vermont – and a close collaboration between guitarist Eric Schenkman and Barron , the album began to take shape.
The album, as the band explains, is the result of a relaxed and pressure-free recording process. “We weren’t really thinking about a record,” Comess says. “We’ve been through a lot of phases in our 35-year career, and sometimes things are really exciting, other times they’re extremely difficult. When we made this record, we captured a moment that felt effortless. There’s a really energy fresh in the songs, the feeling of having discovered the songs while we were playing them”.
“Spin Doctors fans will be blown away by this new record,” says Barron. “It has that vintage Spin Doctors sound that will delight the ears and denser material reminiscent of “Pocket Full Of Kryptonite”, but with years of experience behind it.”
Formed in 1988 in New York City, Spin Doctors debuted with “Pocket Full of Kryptonite” in 1991, selling over ten million copies worldwide and releasing two hit singles: “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong” , which reached no. 2 on the Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart, and the now ubiquitous Billboard Hot 100 Top Ten hit “Two Princes,” which was the No. 1 rock radio hit. 1 of 199 and nominated for a Grammy for best rock performance by a duo or group. They have appeared on SNL, played major festivals like Glastonbury and opened for the Rolling Stones. And after three decades and almost two thousand shows, the Spin Doctors are still here.
