The reason why Elton John changed his name
Elton John confessed that he felt empty after officially changing his name, Reginald Kenneth Dwightin favor of the pseudonym. He confessed this during an interview on Good Morning America while talking about the documentary ‘Never Too Late’ directed by RJ Cutler and John’s husband, David Furnishwhich will be visible on Disney+ starting December 13th.
The presenter of the television program Robin Roberts he in a certain sense challenged the 77-year-old British musician’s statement by recalling how some time ago he himself declared that “he would never have made it as Reg, with Elton John yes”, adding: “You hated being called Reg.
”.
In response, Elton explained how “Reginald was a really old-fashioned name” and, what’s more, he hated the diminutive Reggie. “I really didn’t like it. And as soon as I could, I changed my name. I was very clever. I thought: ‘Nobody’s really called Elton, so I’ll be Elton and I’ll be the only Elton.'”
Elton then continued his speech by saying: “I wanted to leave my childhood and that person behind me”, recalling how this happened during his historic concert at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles in 1975. “I realized that I had put everything into my work and in my art, in my recordings, and that there was nothing underneath. I was just a void. I had left little Reggie behind, but little Reggie was still inside me.”
