Previously released only in the limited edition in 3LP for the 30th anniversary of “No Need to Argue”, this box has been exhausted immediately after the announcement. Originally recorded on February 14, 1995, the performance of nine songs made its television debut on April 18 of that year. Filmed at the Howard Gilman Opera House in Brooklyn, It was broadcast during the sixth season of the acclaimed series that showed us, within a bare and acoustic setting, some of the most popular artists and musicians.
“We had seen some of the greatest names of music such as Rem, Pearl Jam, The Cure and Nirvana Make their unplugged and we were incredulous to be able to follow their footsteps – recalls the drummer Fergal Lawler – MTV was making a series of recordings in this beautiful old theater. There was a really relaxed atmosphere even with the audience sitting on the floor“ The Cranberries were confirmed at the highest levels of alternative rock. Performed after the exit of their second album “No Need to Argue”, The “MTV Unplugged” lineup included songs from that fundamental album, including “Dreaming My Dreams”, “Ode to My Family”, “Empty”, “Zombie” and the title track. Among the other pieces performed there are also hits “Linger” (from their debut “Everybody Else is doing it, So Why Can’t We?”), “Free to decide” and “I’m still remembering”, which would have been published the following year in the work of 1996 “To the Faithful Departed”.
The track not present in the album is also included “Yesterday’s Gone”, never recorded in the studio. “Dolores and I wrote ‘Yesterday’s Gone’ – reveals the guitarist Noel Hogan – there was a piano in the theater and I said: ‘I have an idea!’ And in a couple of hours the piece was born. The only time we played it was for MTV” By selecting it as one of its “8 mtv unplugged performances that Should Get Vinyl Repint”, the set became even more memorable after the death of the singer Dolores O’Riordan in 2018.
