Geezer Butler became a bass player by seeing Jack Bruce play

The best three bass players in history according to Geezer Butler

The bassist of Black Sabbath Geezer Butler he revealed to the magazine Revolvers who are your three favorite bass players of all time. Each of these musicians has left a mark on their musical journey.

These are the names of the bass players indicated by Geezer Butler: “My favorites have always been Jack Bruce, James Jamerson and Paul McCartney: three completely different musicians.” The 76-year-old British musician explained what makes each of these musicians special in his eyes starting with Jack Bruce. “When I saw Cream, Jack Bruce amazed me with his playing. His approach was almost that of a lead guitarist, and Cream was one of the first bands I saw with just one guitar, without a rhythm guitarist or keyboard player.”

Speaking of Paul McCartney and of James Jamerson he declared that he considered them geniuses. “Paul McCartney’s bass playing is unmatched, some of his bass lines are pure genius. “Something” has my favorite bass lines ever. Jamerson was a genius too. His Motown bass playing is key to those songs.”

In his early years, Butler couldn’t afford a real bass. He tuned a regular guitar to reproduce lower frequencies. This unconventional starting point helped forge the approach that would later define his sound. His style developed from a love of jazz and pop, fused with the power required by heavy rock.
