The 10 best-selling albums in Britain of the 21st century
To celebrate the National Album Daywhich took place on Saturday 18 October, Official Charts – the organization that manages the sales charts in Great Britain – has published a list of the 40 best-selling rock and metal studio albums of the twenty-first century.
At the top of the chart (you can consult it below) is the 2004 album by Green Day “American Idiot” (read the review here), which, in its twenty-one years of life, has sold over 2.6 million copies in the United Kingdom, between sales and streaming.
The Californian band welcomed the news by declaring: “We made ‘American Idiot’ as a deeply human statement of defiance: against fear, against lies, against apathy. But it’s also a character-driven concept album. It was risky, loud, personal, and it changed everything for us. Twenty years later, the fact that it still resonates means everything, and we’re very proud that it continues to inspire people around the world.”
