Steve Jones: “I haven’t spoken to John Lydon in 16 years”
The guitarist of Sex PistolsSteve Jones claims not to speak to his former bandmate John Lydonthe singer Johnny Rottenfor over ten years. The now 69-year-old London musician revealed this while speaking on the Rockonteurs podcast. “I haven’t spoken to him for years. 2008 was the last time I spoke to him. We did 30 concerts around Europe. We did a lot of festivals, in Japan, in Australia. “We ended up at Hammersmith Odeon, at the Hammersmith Apollo, and then we did another gig in the Basque Country and that was it.”
Just like in their previous breakups, tensions within the
Sex Pistols have always proved too difficult to overcome. The band’s last show with Lydon took place on September 5, 2008 at the Azkena Festival in Vitoria. “After that, enough. Too much. Too old, it was too much.”
Earlier this year, Steve Jones he reunited with the drummer Paul Cook and the bass player Glen Matlock to revive the SexPistols with Frank Carterthe frontman of the punk band Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakesto sing in place of John Lydon. The group played nine concerts, eight in Great Britain and one in Italy, in Romano d’Ezzelino, in the province of Vicenza.
About the 2024 experience of the Sex PistolsSteve Jones commented: “Totally different. A different atmosphere. Like night and day.” He then sang Carter’s praises. “It’s not trying to be John. It’s just fun. You know what I mean? And it’s fun. Plus we’re playing it the way it’s supposed to be played. With this crazy guy jumping around. And it adds a great element to the fun part of the whole thing. .
Closing Steve Jones confirmed that the new lineup of Sex Pistols he will also return to concerts in 2025. “We will go on tour next year.”
