“Stasera che sera” by Matia Bazar turns fifty

Matia Bazar’s first great success “Stasera che sera”this year, he turned fifty. Carlo Marralehistorical founder and co-author of the Genoese band’s greatest hits, e Silvia Midnightfor many years the voice of the group born in Genoa, celebrate this anniversary with a new acoustic version, on the radio and digitally. “Stasera che sera” was released in March 1975 and became the soundtrack for entire generations. The new version combines the elegance of Marrale’s guitar with the voices of the two artists. The piece, which in the original version was sung by Antonella Ruggiero, is released under the name Marrale-Mezzanotte, not under the hat of the bandwhich recently continues to be plagued by profound misunderstandings between the various components. Silvia Mezzanotte in a recent interview with I read stated: “The Matia Bazaars? For the fans it’s me and Carlo Marrale, not for Italian law. How much money wasted on lawyers…”. The reference is to the impossibility, in Italy, of using the brand/name Matia Bazar.

But let’s get back to the song. “I have a very clear memory of the moment in which “Stasera che sera” was born – says Carlo Marrale – it was the late afternoon of January 1st ’75. I was returning from the New Year’s Eve party organized with Cassano, Stellita, Antonella Ruggiero and other friends. As soon as I got home I picked up the guitar and as if I had always played it, the whole first part came to me straight away…those notes were the gift that the new year brought me. Aldo Stellita wrote the lyrics in a short time and the song was ready: almost without knowing it we were laying the foundations of a very long and international career. Listening to it again after 50 years I realize that we really did a great job… together with Silvia Mezzanotteto which I have a great artistic connection, we have chosen to celebrate its 50th anniversary by returning to the origins: simply a guitar and two voices”.

The anniversary of “Stasera che sera” also became the occasion for a tour of Italian theaters with the two protagonist artists. “I am happy – continues Silvia Mezzanotte – to celebrate this great masterpiece with Carlo and to sing the most beautiful Matia Bazar songs with him: since 2019 we have performed together on the most beautiful Italian and international stages, refining emotions and sensations, calibrating and experimenting with the magic of our singing together. And this is our figure. It can be found in the elegance of Carlo’s guitar, in the simplicity of the acoustic arrangement that we chose to rework this extraordinary hit, but above all in the enchantment of our voices every time they meet”.
