Smashing Pumpkins: The 35th Anniversary of “Gish” with Two Editions
Almost 35 years after its debut, “Gish”the first album by Smashing Pumpkinsreturns on vinyl for its anniversary. The release is scheduled for May 29, 2026, almost exactly on the day in 1991 when the album changed the rules of independent rock. Registered with the manufacturer Butch Vig at Smart Studios in Madison, The Pumpkins’ work mixes rock, metal, psychedelia, pop and shoegaze, creating a rich soundlayered and still surprisingly current today. Songs like “I Am One”, “Siva” and “Rhinoceros” helped make the project one of the most influential independent debuts of the 90s, later certified platinum.
For the 35th anniversary, the band has decided to offer two vinyl versions: a limited edition on gray vinyl with pink and purple splashes in the original 1991 packaging, and a standard version on black vinyl, again with the original packaging. The colorful one will also be available via the online store Billy Corganwhile both editions will arrive in independent stores, designed for collectors and enthusiasts who want to relive the debut experience. The charm of “Gish” lies not only in the sound: critics have always underlined the album’s ability to combine powerful dynamics, imposing riffs and moments of surprising delicacy.
The album, despite belonging to a specific era, continues to exert an intergenerational influence, as demonstrated by Corgan’s recent collaborations, including a reinterpretation of “Zombie” with YUNGBLUDand his podcast The Magnificent Otherswhich celebrates often overlooked artists and cultural figures. With these new editions, “Gish” is not just a celebratory anniversary: it is an opportunity to rediscover one of the most ambitious and innovative debuts of the 90s rock scene, a record that was able to combine energy, ambition and sonic poetry, remaining alive in the memory of fans of yesterday and today.
