Singers and pseudonyms: towards the ridiculous… and beyond

When, exactly, did it start? I wouldn’t be able to precisely date the beginning of this stupid drift: the fact is that for a few years now the race for the most bizarre, obscure and unpronounceable pseudonym has become unstoppable. Just take the two lists of candidates for the Sanremo Festival 2026 to realize that there is no longer any limit to the ridiculous.

Examples? Here is a selection of pseudonyms from the list of 34 participants in Sanremo Giovani admitted to the final phase (there were 524 aspirants):

Agèlo, AMSI, Cainero, CARO WOW, COLA SIEL, Deddè, Eyeline, Jeson, LA MESSA, MIMSAY, Petit, Seltsam, Soap, Welo.

And here is a wider selection among the members of Area Sanremo:

Alberinoi, Anomalya, Tinai, Daring, Yume, Alysio, Riel, Z4R, Mavee, Chiuso Per Tramo, Aury, Marcù, Chiwi, Kiki, Denisee, Desil, Valeriowave, Cagesia, Gieffe, Bush, Jaelle, DIoneo, Maiisha, Ale Balze, Sun, Monatta, Francescoscrivec, Talyra, Fem, Avia, Namida, Moma, Giadì, Enne, Veetti, Bluastro, Rockham, Jilhara, Linn, Niandra, JVSP, Joan Peaterson (his birth name is Mattia Chemello…), Sisia, Il Vagabondo aka Houston, Malvax, Mezzanera, Depsure, Dima, Eos, Vinile, Auseba, Fiore Akamono, RE:Pietro, Jore, Bluesy, Vangio, Kefa, Grid, Zanze, CX, Dynamite 36, Mille Para, Reeva, Liner, Ianus, Ritaesse, R3LLO, Cila, Woede, Virghee, Stewie, Glasond, Doppio, NXS, Kiam, Basim, Herré, Calìa, Ljdo, Matsby, Prim, Ora Frenky, Ciuri, Vapoelyas, ALT+F4, Kopha, Skeye, 1730, Dah, Leof, Syva, Hanami, Serze, Sfarz, Gioen, Wemme Flow, Kyma, Lovinne. Plebbo, Cigarettewest, Mash, Ilred, Equarantacinque, Evan Ax, Ghrangell, Corha. Alteo, Sho, Spicci, MichelangeloHWK, E’ Ferrari!, Shabel, Bloomie, Vee Jeck, Duedimè, Kida, Sama, Ginko, Sidy, Schianta, Nino, Khion, Ayle, Dis3. Elias27, Sk4t, Arale, Djomi, Jas, Imeon

One might wonder: don’t they have a friend who advises them?

Then I’ll answer myself: if in 2026 there will be pseudonyms like Samurai Jay competing among the Big (ha ha) of the Festival – without wanting to take anything away from Gennaro Amatore, owner of this pseudonym – it’s not too surprising if onomastics have taken this desolate slope. And it is just one of the many signs of a more generalized decline that appears unstoppable.
