Pink Floyd, the clue: “Live in Venice” at the cinema, 37 years later?
After the one in Pompeii, Pink Floyd seem to be intent on reviving in a film another of the most legendary concerts in their history: the one held in 1989 in Venice. At least, that’s what it seems. A video published today on the British band’s official YouTube channel sparked the fans’ enthusiasm and curiosity. Title: “Pink Floyd: Live in Venice”. Incidentally, next to the title, the expression “official trailer”, which is used to launch upcoming films or documentaries. The clip brings together some of the images taken from the concert that saw David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright perform in Venice on 15 July 1989.
The band has not released further information about this mysterious “Live in Venice”. Here, below, is the trailer published today on the band’s official YouTube channel:
Considered one of the most extraordinary and controversial rock concerts ever held in Italy, the event was free and organized on a floating stage on the occasion of the traditional Feast of the Redeemer in the presence of approximately 200 thousand spectators positioned on the banks and boats of the San Marco basin. The concert was broadcast worldwide by Rai with an audience of around 100 million viewers. After the concert, the controversy escalated due to the large quantity of rubbish (about three hundred tons of waste and five hundred cubic meters of empty cans and bottles) left on the ground by the public. Another controversy concerned the alleged vandalism that occurred around the city.
The performance was the band’s penultimate performance during their second European tour of the “A momentary lapse of reason” tour. On that occasion Gilmour, Mason and Wright were accompanied by Jon Carin (keyboards, sound effects, vocals), Tim Renwick (guitars, backing vocals), Guy Pratt (bass, vocals), Scott Page (sax, guitars), Gary Wallis (percussion, keyboards, vocals), Rachel Fury (backing vocals), Durga McBroom (backing vocals) and Lorelei McBroom (backing vocals). This is the concert setlist (“Sorrow” and “Money” were performed in a reduced form):
“Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Part I)”
“Learning to Fly”
“Yet Another Movie”
“Round and Around”
“Sorrow”
“The Dogs of War”
“On the Turning Away”
“Time”
“The Great Gig in the Sky”
“Wish You Were Here”
“Money”
“Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)”
“Comfortably Numb”
“Run Like Hell”
Already in 1989, a television special was created by Dutch TV on the Pink Floyd concert in Venice, directed by Wayne Isham and Egbert van Hees, broadcast in the United Kingdom. Curiously, on Prime Video there is a page dedicated to the 1989 British special, with the new date changed to 2026.
The footage of the Venice concert was collected for the first time in 2019 by Pink Floyd in the “Pink Floyd The Later Years” box set, on DVD and Blu-Ray.
