Phil Collins' Embarrassment in Front of Queen Elizabeth II

Phil Collins admits: ‘I’m not the biggest Genesis fan’

Phil Collins he admitted he wasn’t a big fan of the Genesis (in which he played from 1970, until the last concert in 2022), thinking back to his career as drummer and then singer of the band after Peter Gabriel’s departure from the group.

In the new documentary “Phil Collins: Drummer First”, published by Drumeo, the 73-year-old musician was asked to summarize his life and career.

“I’m not the biggest Genesis fan,” he admits. “There are things I like, things I’m proud of, but also things I like less.”

He is quick to add that he enjoyed his time with the band, but reflects: “I’ve been playing drums since I was 5, there are things you like to listen to again and others not so much.”

Elsewhere in “Phil Collins: Drummer First,” Collins confirms that his favorite Genesis song is “Down and Outt”, taken from !… And Then There Were Three…” (1978), which marked a change in musical direction following the departure of guitarist Steve Hackett.

The LP’s opening track, “Down and Out”, was one of three written by Collins, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks in complete collaboration. It proved to be a difficult song to complete due to its complex rhythmic phrases. “‘Down and Out’… I haven’t heard it in ages, but it’s a landmark piece.”
