Nick Cave’s song nominated for an Oscar
The favorite song to win the Oscar is “Golden”, from the KPop animated film Demon Hunters: it has already won the award at the Golden Globes, as well as being a worldwide hit. But also nominated for best original song, for the first time, is Nick Cave, who together with Bryce Dessner, guitarist of the National, composed the soundtrack of the film “Train Dreams” and the song of the same title. Cave is a regular and very prolific composer of soundtracks – especially together with his friend in the Bad Seeds Warren Ellis – but it is precisely the first time that he has been nominated for the Best Original Song.
The song is included in the credits of the film, produced by Netflix and made available on the platform last autumn. Directed by Clint Bentley, “Train Dreams” stars Joel Edgerton as Robert Grainier, a lumberjack and railroad worker who “leads an existence of unexpected depth and beauty in the rapidly changing America of the early 20th century.” The story is based on the novel by Denis Johnson. “When we started thinking about a song for the film, Nick seemed like the perfect artist,” said the director. “It turns out that ‘Train Dreams’ is one of his favorite books of all time, but initially he was afraid he wouldn’t have time because he was about to go on tour. Then he saw the movie, was inspired to write something, and it all came together very quickly.”
“I knew it would create something beautiful and intense, but the ending of the film has a very delicate tone, difficult to grasp, and I didn’t want a song that pushed the viewer in another emotional direction. Yet, from the beginning, Nick and I were on the same wavelength. He read me some verses that he was working on and I was almost overwhelmed by the situation: I had been a fan of his for so long and I found myself not only talking to him about life and art, but listening to verses written specifically for a film I had It was a truly special moment. Nick is a very rare artist, who I admire immensely. There is no single trait that defines a song of his – neither sonically nor lyrically – because he wrote songs about every aspect of our experience, despite the pain and suffering.”
