Neil Young’s ‘Thrasher’ Previews His Archive Box Set

Neil Young shared an unreleased performance of “Thrasher“, taken from the box set “Archives Vol. III (1976-1987)” coming out next September 6th.

The recording comes from a May 1978 residency at the Boarding House in San Francisco, a portion of which was included on Young’s 1979 live album, Rust Never Sleeps. Young debuted “Thrasher” on the opening date, May 24, and played both the opening and closing set for five days.

The inspiration for the song came during a road trip through the American West. “I wrote ‘Thrasher’ in the car on the way to Albuquerque from Taos, New Mexico. I was accompanied by Carpio, a Native American who Dennis Hopper introduced me to while filming ‘Human Highway,’” Young said on his official website. “Driving through the magnificent beauty of New Mexico, the words kept coming to me,” Young added. “I saw the eagles soaring, the deep canyons, the road ahead, reflecting on my journey over the past few years and being grateful to be where I was.”

This newly released version of “Thrasher” is from the first performance on May 27.

The song is one of the 198 tracks featured on the 17 CDs and 5 Blu-rays Neil Young Archives Vol. III (1976-1987), which include live material, studio performances and new mixes and edits. More than 120 songs are unreleased.

The Deluxe Edition Blu-rays contain 11 clips, four of which are previously unreleased, for a total of 14 hours of video.
