Musical docu-films: here are the most viewed films of 2024

What were the most watched musical docu-films of 2024 on streaming platforms? The Luminate company collected data provided by Netflix, Prime Video and Disney+ relating to views of docu-films during the year that has just ended.

Among the hottest titles, “Miss Americana” by Taylor Swift (available on Netflix), “I Am: Céline Dion” on Céline Dion (available on Prime Video), “Beatles ’64” by David Tedeschi – produced by Martin Scorsese – on the arrival of the Liverpool quartet in the United States (available on Disney+) and “The greatest night in pop”, the film on the genesis of “We are the World” with Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and the other protagonists of that operation set up in 1985 by Jackson, Richie and Quincy Jones (available on Netflix). Who won the challenge?.

In first place in the rankings is “The greatest night in pop”, a success with the public and critics that literally conquered everyone. Released on Netflix on January 29, 2024, the docu-film – containing archive footage and unpublished interviews created for the occasion – achieved an impressive 1.27 billion views during the year that has just ended, according to data provided to Luminate by the streaming platform. A triumph.

Silver medal, surprisingly, for Céline Dion and her “I Am: Céline Dion”. The docu-film focused on the life and career of the Canadian pop diva, which also recounts her battle against rigid person syndrome, was distributed in streaming worldwide on June 25, 2024 and on Prime Video – according to the data provided – it totaled 507.1 million views.

On the lowest step of the podium is “Return of the king: The Fall and Rise of Elvis Presley”, the story of Elvis Presley’s triumphant return in 1968 directed by Jason Hehir with contributions from Priscilla Presley, Bruce Springsteen and Baz Luhrmann, among others. Despite having been distributed worldwide on Netflix only on November 13, 2024, in a month and a half the docu-film managed to reach third place in the ranking, totaling – according to the data provided by the streaming giant – the beauty of 340 .9 million views.

Taylor Swift only has to settle for fourth place in the rankings. It must be said, however, that his “Miss Americana” was even released in 2020: despite not being a “new” product, during 2024 it still totaled views equal to 230.7 million. Not bad. In fifth place we find “Carole King & James Taylor: Just call out my name” from 2022 (it has totaled 225.4 million views on Max). In sixth place is “Hate to love: Nickleback” (released on March 27, 2024, with a total of 221.2 million views on Netflix). In seventh place in the rankings is “The Beach Boys” (released on May 24, it has gained 215.5 million views on Disney+). In eighth place “Megan Thee Stallion: In Her Words” (146.3 million views from October 31st to December 31st on Prime Video). The Beatles with “Beatles ’64” stop at ninth place in the rankings, but the documentary produced by Martin Scorsese was released on Disney+ just last November 29th and in a month it was viewed 132.7 million times. “American Symphony”, the docu-film dedicated to Jon Batiste, closes the top ten, which despite being released on November 29, 2023, totaled 97.8 million views on Netflix during 2024.
