Morrissey signed with Sire Records: new album on the way?

Three years after the breakup with Capitol Records, Morrissey may have found a new record company. An update that appeared today, Friday 19 December, on the artist’s official website suggests that the singer has signed an agreement with Sire Records. The post simply shows the label’s logo, without any additional explanation or comment. This was enough, however, to ignite the enthusiasm of the fans, convinced that the new contract could finally lead to the publication of “Bonfire Of Teenagers”the long-heralded and never-released album.

The disc-related problems date back to December 2022, when Morrissey announced he had “voluntarily withdrawn from any association with Capitol Records”despite having communicated only two months before that the album would be released with that label. On the same occasion, the artist also revealed that Miley Cyrus had requested the removal of his backing vocals from the song “I Am Veronica”recorded in 2020. Both collaborations ended against the backdrop of controversy related to Morrissey’s political positions and his support for the controversial British far-right party For Britainwhose badge he had worn during a television appearance in 2019.

Despite the criticism and controversy – so much so that the former bandmate Johnny Marr stated that these positions “cast a shadow over the Smiths” – Morrissey has always rejected the label of far-right artist. Last summer, the singer returned to talk about “Bonfire Of Teenagers” with a long message published on his official website, accusing Capitol Records of “fascism” and promoting a “growing culture of censorship”. Morrissey also stated that he came to believe that the label had decided to release the record “for the sole purpose of sabotaging him.”. At the moment there are no official confirmations on the content of the agreement with Sire Records nor on the actual release of the album. But after years of postponements, disruptions and controversies, the mere appearance of a logo could mark the beginning of a new chapter – and perhaps, finally, the end of the long wait for “Bonfire Of Teenagers”.
