Mimì: “After the victory at X Factor, now the apprenticeship begins”

Four months ago the eighteenth edition of “X Factor” won, beating the very favorite patagarri, the Les Votives and Lorenzo Salvetti in front of 1.8 million spectators. Now Mimì Caruso, aka simply Mimì, 18 years old, is preparing to bring out the single that in fact marks his official debut after the triumph of Sky’s talent. He is titled “Brooklyn”, comes out tomorrow and sees the singer of Malian origins wink at the sounds of the Hip Hop and the American R & B of the early 2000s, the one forged by the Dr. Dre icon. And on the cover it looks like a small Mary J. Blige.

Was this that the reference?

“Yes. I wanted to recover the sounds of the great container of US urban music of the 2000s, re -actualizing and shaping them on me. I grew up listening to the discs of Mary J. Blige, Erykah Badu, the Outkast. That music there has always inspired me and nourished”.

That aesthetics is returning to today’s mainstream: just think of Doechii, Lola Young. What is it that fascinates the new generations, of that world that have lived only on a reflection?

“Those records are contemporary because they were already on the time. I like the idea of taking those sounds and combining them with things that are fashionable now: it is a way to propose something new in today’s pop. The old doors always open new doors”.

Who did you work with the song with?

“The piece bears my signature and those of Leonardo Zaccaria and Vincenzo Colella (already alongside Angelina Mango, Gaia, Marco Mengoni, ed). The production is from Faffa, Daniele Sartori and Leo. With them I am working on my first album, night and day”.

Is this the sound world you want to represent?

“Yes. I will show many facets of me, the strongest one, the sweetest one, the most delicate one, but always inspired by the urban of the early 2000s”.

Do you understand what you want to occupy in Italian pop?

“I want to carve out a space of my own. I was discovered in a period in which authenticity returned to being central. And this thing rewarded me.”

Are you afraid of losing it, that authenticity?

“No. It’s part of my character. I will remain like this.”

How do you protect yourself from the psychological collapses that have affected colleagues such as Sangiovanni and Angelina?

“I lean on my family, to friends. I know that in moments of despair there are always. This work allows you to go from zero to one hundred in a moment. The important thing is to find the middle way, the 50. Take up a balance of your own”.

How has your life changed after X Factor? What real job opportunities are you having?

“This summer I will make a series of concerts, also performing on the stages of some festivals. It will be a way to do gym, the apprenticeship that I did not do before. I will travel, I will sing, I will make me know. Among the various things, there is a collaboration with Shablo: I will participate in his shows together with Joshua and torment”.
