Michael Stipe Performs New Song “The Rest of Ever” Live

Yesterday evening Michael Stipe was a guest of ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’where he premiered the new song, “The Rest of Ever”as well as talking about his soon-to-be-released debut solo album.

During the interview, the former frontman of REM revealed that he was finishing the lyrics for his album and described one of the songs as “the sound of a tree hearing itself for the first time through MIDI. It’s a bit of a strange situation. A friend of mine recorded a tree in my backyard in Georgia and listened to it again. So it sounds like Daft Punk, but I’m putting a shanty-song over it.”

Stipe then performed live for the first time “The Rest of Ever”a song from his debut album which he announced coming out towards the end of the yearalso gave away 215 T-shirts to all the staff and crew of “The Late Show.”

At another point in the interview, Colbert asked Stipe if a biopic about the
REM
the musician denied that he is planning to make a film, but joked about who could play him at different moments in his life. Colbert suggested the comedian
David Cross
for the bearded Stipe version, while the younger Stipe could be played by
Billie Eilish
given the similarity of their “blue eyes”.
