Matt Helders, drummer of the Arctic Monkeys, work as a soloist?

Matt Heldersortthe drummer of the Arctic Monkeysrecently shared some updates on social media that suggest the arrival of new music, probably a solo project.

In the last few days, he has published short clips that portray him in the studio, accompanied by numbered captions. The first video, shared two days ago, shows Helders in the studio with an electronic sound that recalls a relaxed and 90s atmosphere. The second clip, dated April 13, presents a more lively song and maintains the same visual style as the first. Finally, the third video, published today 14 April, offers electronic sounds in line with the previous ones.

If these advances lead to a complete solo album, it would represent Helders’ first work in this format by the 2008 DJ Mix Album, part of the “Late Night Tales” series.

“Late Night Tales”, previously known as “Another Late Night”, is a series of albums released, since 2001, by the independent label Latenighttales. Each album is curated by a composer or DJ who selects traces of other artists, creating a mix that reflects their musical influences. The publisher requires artists to include the songs that have inspired them in their musical career. In addition, many albums end with a “story track”, read by famous British personalities such as Brian Blessed and Patrick Moore.

From that release there have been clues on a possible solo album and in 2018 Helders declared that he wanted to create a sufficient amount of material to justify an entire album. He expressed his desire to develop his musical style and explore different directions.

In addition to his role in the Arctic Monkeys, Helders has collaborated with artists like Iggy Pop And he participated in various musical projects, including Remix and collaborations with known names such as Lady Gaga and The Last Shadow Puppets. In 2019, he released an album with Joe Carnall, The Milburn frontman, entitled “Good Cop Bad Cop”.

In 2023, Helders collaborated on the solo album of Albert Hammond Jr. “Melodies on hiatus”. In addition to music, Helders is an passionate photographer (many of his photos are published by himself on the net with the pseudonym “Cautous Horse”) and also edited the cover of the latest album of the Arctic Monkeys, “The Car”. In 2022, the band released what is currently the album and participated in a world tour, culminating with a performance at the Glastonbury Festival in 2023.

Finally, at the beginning of 2025, Helders participated in a charity initiative to help people affected by fires in Los Angeles.
