Madonna: how her relationship with Tupac began
It seems incredible but Madonna asked for help Rosie Perez to “tow” Tupac Shakur. It all dates back to the Soul Train Music Awards in 1993 and a chaperone who stood up the actress from “Do the Right Thing” (Spike Lee’s 1989 film).
Rosie, now 60 years old of Puerto Rican origins, reminded the “Drew Barrymore Show” the episode: “I was going to the Soul Train Music Awards and my date calls me half an hour before I get in the car and says, ‘I can’t go with you because my girlfriend will see me.’ And I was like, ‘Son of a bitch! “And I hang up the phone and then it rings again and I think it’s him. And I said, ‘Listen….’ And he goes, ‘What, it’s Tupac.’ And he went on, ‘You know, I’ll come. with you tonight, we’re going to go in there, act like we’re on a date, and he’s going to die.”
When host Drew Barrymore asked if they had met up with anyone else that night, Rosie confirmed that she had been seeing her “dear friend” Madonna and that the “Like a Virgin” star had urged her to meet Tupac. She said: “My dear friend Madonna was there, she came up to me and said, ‘Yo, how’s it going? Are you all together?’ I say, ‘Yes.’ She goes, ‘Hook me’” (referring to the rapper).
Madonna secretly dated Tupac, who was fatally shot in 1996, for a year until 1994, and a “deeply personal” letter the rapper wrote to her revealed their romance ended over race and their public images.
In an excerpt from the note – made public by TMZ before it went up for auction five years ago – she wrote: “Being seen with a black man would in no way jeopardize your career, if anything it would make you seem much more open and exciting “. “But for me – the rapper continues to write – I feel that because of my ‘image’ I would have disappointed half the people who made me who I think I am.” “I never meant to hurt you,” Shakur concluded.
