Lumineers: their fifth album is coming

THE Lumineers have announced their fifth studio album “Automatic” which the American indie folk duo (consisting of Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites) will release on February 14th. The new 11-track album follows 2022’s “Brightside.”

“Automatic” is the precursor to the single “Same Old Song”, available online and accompanied by a video.

“This album marks 20 years of collaboration between Jeremiah and me,” Schultz explained in a statement. “The album explores some of the absurdities of the modern world, such as the increasingly blurred lines between what is real and what is not, and the variety of ways in which we numb ourselves trying to combat both boredom and overstimulation.”

‘Automatic’ was recorded in less than a month and Schultz said the project is “very relevant to this era”. Fraites said there’s “a palpable sense of connection between me and Wes” on the LP, adding, “There’s a lot of love on this record.”

The pair co-produced the album alongside David Baron and Simone Felice, taking inspiration from Peter Jackson’s 2021 Beatles documentary Get Back.

The duo say the LP is their “rawest and most personal collection.” “People who think they have our number will be surprised,” Fraites explained.

The description reads: “While songs like the self-deprecating ‘Asshole’ and the spare, tongue-in-cheek ‘Better Day’ reveal a risky intimacy and previously unexplored undercurrent of humor, ‘Automatic’ remains what fans everywhere have learned to love by the Lumineers: dark themes wrapped in upbeat, infectious melodies, soaring choruses destined to be sung by tens of thousands of people every night on the road.”

The album’s single “Same Old Song” is accompanied by an official music video, directed by Anaïs LaRocca (Hundred Waters). Mirroring the emotional lyrics of the single, the video sees the Lumineers performing in front of VHS home movie-style projections. These form a collage of moments that give a surreal glimpse into the duo’s memories.
