Lambrini Girls: corrosive punk against the cult of “big dicks”
Irreverent, cheeky, feminist, rude, loud, blonde and punk to the core. The Lambrini Girls, the Brighton duo formed by Phoebe Lunny (vocals/guitar) and Lilly Macieira (bass)have spent the last few years churning out restless singles, leaving traces of what will be their debut album “Who Let The Dogs Out”, which will be released on January 10, 2025 via City Slang. But in the meantime the two Lambrini have stood out for the new single “Big Dick Energy”, a hymn against the toxicity of the alpha male. “Man comes in many forms, from world leaders to technology CEOs to the ‘humble’ kids of the web. But what unites them? The fact that society has celebrated their supposedly enormous ‘figurative and literal’ dicks, which they constantly flaunt as a form of power. Why? Because it’s toxic masculinity“, says the duo who in the song, as the title suggests, does not use filters to explain these concepts.
Then they add: “The definition of ‘Big Dick Energy is a securityit does not need to be proven. Which raises the question: How big is that dick actually? If you haven’t figured it out yet, it’s not that big. Those men are not as strong and important as they would like you to believe“. “Who Let The Dogs Out” was recorded with Daniel Fox of the Gilla Band with mixing by Seth Manchester: “The record bottles everything that is wrong with the modern world and shakes it up. If seasoning political songs with humor is like putting a sparkles in the bread, then ‘Who Let The Dogs Out’ is like a fireworks display in the factory itself: strange, dangerous, exciting”, is how it is presented by two technicians who worked on the project. “You know how Fleetwood Mac dedicated ‘Rumours’ to their cocaine dealer, I think we should dedicate this album to all the alcohol we bought”, the duo underlined ironically.
Since releasing their debut EP “You’re welcome” in 2023, the Lambrini Girls have won a number of accolades along the wayincluding a nomination for Rising Star at the Rolling Stone UK Awards, a cover of Kerrang! and around twenty appearances at international festivals from Glastonbury to Iceland Airwaves. Establishing a reputation as one of the best live bands to come out of the UK, with many parallels to the likes of Idlestheir combination of blunt, ferocious punk, social criticism and biting humor has led audiences to draw comparisons with Bikini Kill, Gilla Band, Shame, Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes, Iggy Pop and others. Only time will tell if Lambrini Girls are yet another punk band spit out of the UK, or have and will have the ability to make their mark. For now let’s enjoy them, they’re fun, stinging and putting their finger on the wound.
