John Lydon: “Trump is the Sex Pistols of politics”
When did John Lydon ever miss an opportunity to make an eccentric outing? This time, the former frontman of Sex Pistols he compared the President of the United States to his old band, without forgetting Nigel Farage, the founder of the British Brexit Party.
“I only met Donald Trump once and I didn’t like him“, Johnny Rotten tells the “Mirror”, thinking back to the VH1 Music Awards, the ceremony in the United States where he met the Republican President. “I had a program called Rotten Radio and so they invited me to this show. And my lovely wife (Nora, passed away in 2023, ed.) came with me. Trump was walking in with Jennifer Lopez and Nora stepped on her dress tearing the train. And so they got angry at us. It was a magnificent fiasco. Trump is the Sex Pistols of politics“.
Also in an interview eight years ago, Lydon said of Trump that “there are many, many problems with him as a human being, but there might be a chance that something good will come out of that situation, because he terrorizes politicians. That’s a joy to me. A potential friend, dare I say.” In October 2020, as the US election approached, Lydon said he voted for Donald Trump because he believed Joe Biden was “incapable” of leading America. The following month he reiterated this position, stating: “It makes perfect sense to me to vote for a person who really talks about people like me.”
A mixed opinion also on Farage, who defended – together with Brexit – in 2017 and described the meeting with him as “fantastic”. Today he describes it instead as “a fair man“, “someone you meet and asks you ‘do you want to buy one of these watches?'”.
