John Lennon’s piano sold for a record price
The piano on which John Lennon composed some of the Beatles’ most famous songs and set a new record in auctions dedicated to the band.
The instrument – a Broadwood upright piano used by the musician during the making of the album “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” – was sold at Christie’s in New York for approximately 3.247 million dollars. The figure far exceeded the initial estimate, which predicted a price between 400,000 and 600,000 dollars.
Thanks to this sale, the instrument has become the most expensive Beatles item Never sold at auction.
Lennon used this piano to write – together with Paul McCartney – several songs included in the historic 1967 album, including “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds“, “A Day in the Life” and “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!”.
The piano was part of the Jim Irsay Collection, a collection of music, film and sports memorabilia offered for sale by Christie’s. Other historical music objects were also sold during the auction, such as the first Ludwig drum set used by Ringo Starr in the early years of the Beatles’ career, sold for approximately $2.39 million.
